This weekend inspiration is the stuff of childhood dreams — a tree house! But not just any tree house, of course. This stunning luxury tree house was the marketing brainchild of Virgin Holidays who had it built 35 feet off the ground on London’s Southbank to promote travel to South Africa.
The exterior design was inspired by one the several tree top sleeping accommodations at the Lion Sands Game Reserve in South Africa (see very bottom photo). While this tree house didn’t look over vast and romantic savannahs, it did have a private balcony with views of the Thames and St. Paul’s Cathedral. The plush interior with its ample use of tribal fabrics and sculpture created by interior designer Hubert Zandberg achieved the goal to evoke the feeling of a tree house in the middle of Africa in the middle of London.
The marketing angle was an e-mail drawing to stay in the tree house between January 25 and 29. The experience included a six-course gourmet meal prepared by celebrated South African chef Petrus Madutlela who served such South African delicacies as deep-fried meal worms, crocodile and ostrich biltong. And no doubt a great South African wine!
And the real thing: Lion Sands Game Reserve. A true weekend inspiration!
