Weekend Fuel #32: Expectations
The phrase "under wraps" certainly applies in a unique way to the work of Swedish artist Yrjo Edelmann. His hyper-realistic oil paintings are simple -- parcels wrapped haphazardly with either Scotch tape or twine as if someone was in a hurry before or after an art show. They illicit both respect for his precise painting technique designed to fool the eye (trompe l'oeil) and a childlike wonder of what could be under the paper. They bring out our curiosity and expectations. In this case, we'll never know what they cover. The practice here is to simply appreciate what we can see, which is amazing in itself! One could say these pieces are about acceptance and any deeper meaning remains literally under wraps.
