Busting a Myth About Memoirs
I’d like to bust a myth about memoirs I’ve heard lately. You might have noticed there are more of them than ever from celebrities to the almost-famous to successful entrepreneurs like yourself. I've worked on three in the past two years, taking them from zero to published and I'm helping two more wonderful writers get their stories out there this year.
When I tell someone that, in addition my marketing work, I work with clients who want to write, publish and promote a memoir, I am often met with a comment such as, "Interesting. They must have an ego!" I am always surprised to hear this because ego is not at all part of the equation when it comes to telling our stories! It’s more about legacy than that.
Consider: Since we've all been blogging and posting on social media for years now, I feel like we are all writing and reading mini-memoirs every day! There is a reason Instagram Stories are so popular. We are all turning our lives into stories. And with the proliferation and ease of indie publishing, why not elevate your own story into a published memoir?!
At a certain point in our lives, we have experiences, life lessons, world views and wisdom that connect us with others. Our stories can do so much to help, inspire, enourage or entertain others. They create a space for collective sharing, ultimately making us feel less alone.
TWO READING RECOMMENDATIONS
A memoir I'm reading for the first time -- The Auberge of the Flowering Hearth
Some would call this a cookbook but the charming recollections of lunches, dinners and stories by Roy Andries de Groot of a country inn in the high French Alpine valley of Le Grand Cartreuse feels like a memoir to me!
And one I'm rereading -- The Getaway Car: A Practical Memoir of Writing and Life
A short rumination on writing (and life as per the title) by one of my favorite authors, Ann Patchett. The piece is included in a collection of essays called This is the Story of a Happy Marriage. It shows us that memoirs can take on many forms and lengths.
