Kim Kardashian Reminds Us that (sex) and Stories Sell
Stories are powerful drivers of emotional value. How much someone likes something, and how valuable it is to them, be it an object, food or a person, is often affected by what you tell them about it. I was so interested to hear that Kim Kardashian was using story telling to describe her dress at the Met Gala, the fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Putting her spin on the theme of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” Kardashian wore a sheer dress by John Galliano and his Maison Margiela. The accessory that got people talking was a lint-covered cashmere sweater she wore over the chainmail(ish) gown. Some thought it was worn to cover up to a dress malfunction. Possible. But the story I liked was this one -- literally a fairy tale found on her Instagram page.
... As she closed the gate to the secret garden, a profound anguish seized the majestic beast who stood as a silent witness to her departure. It was a love that could never find fulfillment, as fate had decreed their paths would never intertwine again. In a final act of desperate longing, the beast cast a spell, transforming Kimberly's fragile satin dress into an eternal piece of armor. Fashioned from the purest white gold, adorned with shimmering crystals and delicate mirror flowers, it became a symbol of her eternal captivity ...
I love the Beauty and Beast reference and that the entire story has magic, a secret garden and a forbidden love. Does it explain the sweater? Not at all! But she told one reporter that her "character" grabbed it as she fled in the cold night air from a tryst. So who knows the truth? Does it matter? I applaud the fact that there was a story at all going on, especially given the fact that the Met Gala theme was built around fairy tales and nature.
